General Information and Services
Currently, a total of 175 people are serving at the Istanbul University Institute of Oncology, consisting of 26 professors, 10 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 7 specialists, 1 dentist, 6 research assistants, 2 biologists, 10 assistant doctors studying specialties, 6 physicians, 30 offices, 17 technicians, 7 laboratorians, 40 nurses and 11 retainers.
Education, which is one of the main tasks and services of the institute, is explained below in detail.
Annually, an average of 5000 new patients applies at our institute, and 60.000 patients are called for follow-up and checks. An average of 350 patients undergoes radiotherapy every day, with an additional 90 ambulant patients. The institute has 53 beds, with 21 beds on the second floor (4 beds for surgical, 5 beds for brachitherapy patients). 19 beds for adult patients are available on the third floor. Besides, the Child Service has 13 beds.
Our clinic also has a Radiology Unit, which applies an average of 7000 direct graphy and 2000 mammography processes annually. Besides, needle aspiration biopsy and marking along with mammography can be applied as intrusive radiology for subclinical lesions in breasts. Biopsy with ultrasonography can also be applied to masses in liver, kidneys and neck. Surgical unit and pathology laboratories provide multidisciplinary health care service to patients with cancers from diagnosis to treatment and to follow-up. Besides, valuable researches in Basic Oncologic Sciences, as well as local, national and international researches in Clinical Oncology Science are still undertaken by our institute.
Instructors at Istanbul University, Oncology Institute have prepared and published the titles "Pulmonary Carcinoma", "Breast Carcinoma", "Ovary Carcinoma" and "Gastrointestinal Tumors". Instructors and assistants of the institute also contribute to science through their publications, which amount to 100 on national and 50 on international basis), as well as their articles in peer review magazines and communiquës at congresses.
The institute both organizes and contributes to numerous national and international congresses and meetings. The head office of Istanbul Oncology Group, which undertakes scientific studies, is located in the institute.
Capabilities
Nine policlinics provide ambulant examination and treatment services to adult and child patients.
Consultation and treatment can be provided to oncologic patients at the service (2nd and 3rd floors) with 53 beds, which are exclusive for oncologic patients. Services include inpatient treatment at child patient service and outpatient chemotherapy application for adult patients on another floor.
Hematology, biochemistry, sedimentation and Marker examinations are applied on auto-analyzers at laboratories in Basic Oncologic Science. PCR equipment, research microscopes, Laminar Flow, Co2 incubators, Video Gel documentation system and Hybridization Ovens are available at our laboratories.
Our surgical unit has two operating rooms which are fully equipped with endoscopic surgical equipment, liposuction aspirator, rectoscopy and laparoscopy, among others.
Our radiotherapy unit provides brachitherapy with Ir-192 wires for low-does rapid treatment and high-dose rapid brachitherapy device (Gammamed).
Our technical equipment includes:

Three simulators; Simics (Mecaserto), Oldeft (Nukletron) and BT-simulator (Schmadzu)
- Five radiotherapy devices; three Linear Accelerator (Saturn, Orion (General Electric) and Oncor (Siemens)); two Kobalt 60 devices (Alcyon, (General Electric) and Cirus (CIS Biointernational)).
- Radiodiagnostics unit has ultrasonography device, conventional mobile x-ray device (2 items), automatic developers and mammography equipment.
The Radiophysics Laboratory has dosimetry, ion rooms (10 rooms), dose planning computer (4 machines), water phantoms (2 devices), solid-water phantom, Hot Wire, mask development and densitometry (3 items) devices.
